RØMMEKOLLE REVIVAL  Barents Spektakel, Kirkenes, 4th-8th February 2015

Inspired by bacteria, how can humans create sustainable and thriving cultures based on collaboration and symbiotic, non-linear relationships to cope with the challenges we are now facing? Can the process of fermentation in e.g. rømmekolle provide a model for re-imagining sustainable, human cultures? 

When cultures die the know-how and experience of generations dies with it. So does the bond created by continually sharing the culture. When bacterial cultures die their unique and specific relationship to place and the connection between humans and their local microbes also disappears. Fortunately, bacterial cultures are incredibly resilient and can survive for thousands of years. They can be revitalised by being given the right conditions to thrive. As a cultural activist you can reclaim, nurture, cultivate, digest and share these microbial wonders to re-activate yourself and your local environment. Cultivating cross-cultural diversity gives you a Robin Hood-like feeling of stealing back what has been lost in a world where the often invisible transformation of microbes have been belittled, overlooked, neglected, combated, tamed or homogenised in physical as well as metaphorical ways. We need to work WITH nature. Not AGAINST it. And collaborate with each other and our fellow animals and bacterias.

The original purpose of the word lies buried behind layers of new meaning. Reclaiming words can release their hidden potential and help us rediscover connections that we have lost out of sight.

Sigrid Bredal learned to spin as a little girl sitting for hours on her mother's lap during dusky winter days. As her pedalling foot turns the wheel her hands pull and feed the fleece and spins it into yarn. The rhythm, movements, smells, materials, skills and stories also get spun into the substantial thread of experiential knowledge, embodied all the way to her fingertips.The making of crafts becomes a paradox in our times when short term solutions and financial gain often is prioritised over long term perspectives. To spin fleece into yarn is therefore a revolutionary act in the true sense of the word. An alchemical process turning simple fleece into valuable gold in a timeless space where rhythm creates tranquillity, where the slowness and the presence set the conditions and where the material properties wordlessly are retrieved and transformed by experienced hands. Spinning is sensory process of wordless knowledge that can only be learned through patient practice and experience.A truly gentle revolution.

THE ART OF RETHINKING

Aesthetic philosophy for Undergraduates initiated by Centre for Ecological Economics and Ethic in Bodø, Norway.  They invited me to contribute to their ground breaking pilot program, renewing the traditional obligatory philosophy module for Under Graduates at the University. The program is essentially about understanding the relationship between philosophy, art and science.

HIDDEN ECONOMIES (a way out?)

Hidden Economies: A seminar on economic possibility raises a discussion about hidden economies–existing within, next to, beside, and around capitalism. The seminar is inspired by the work of feminist, economic geographers JK Gibson-Graham (Julie Graham and Katherine Gibson), who worked on several publications and projects that sought to destabilise the “monster” of a capitalist economy. 
Capitalist processes shape our daily experiences but do they define them? How and where are people creating economies that ignore the dominant economic system? How do these economies–shared, exchange based, micro-local, etc.–function and what do they look like? Are they temporary or are they sustainable?
Hidden Economies consists of presentations and workshops from artists, activists, and scholars focused on issues of economy within their work. The seminar focuses on how cultural work may contribute to shedding light on economic difference and articulating new economic realities. Central for this project is the idea that economies are always diverse and in the making.
